The 2nd amendment to the US constitution reads: "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." However, these words seem like an outdated relic from days long past. Today's society is less concerned with personal defense than with protecting against government overreach. Many states have enacted laws that restrict gun ownership or require registration which effectively removes any need for individuals to possess firearms at all. This blog post will demonstrate why owning firearms is still important in today's society and how it has helped many others throughout history. One way that the government uses to suppress opposition is by using fear tactics. They can also use force to get their way, but both of these tactics are short-term solutions. The fear tactic will eventually disappear and force is only effective when the government has superior firepower. To solve this problem in the long-term, they must weaken public support for their opposition in order to make it easier for them to achieve their goals. A stronger public support for their opposition would be a much greater threat than any single revolutionary organization could ever pose. The right to bear arms enables an individual to defend themselves from criminals or the state, which are both threats that are persistent in today's society. There are many different forms of firearms, with pistols and revolvers being the most popular. However, the vast majority of guns in the U.S. are rifles (which include shotguns) and may be better suited for hunting than self defense. Historically, in medieval Europe many castles had large storerooms with plenty of supplies to withstand a siege or protect against bandits at night. The attacker would use a battering ram to break down the gate, but the defenders could simply fire their arquebus (AKA hand cannon) to put down any attackers who tried to enter. The only solution that the attacker could come up with was to scale the walls. The defenders would then shower the attackers with arrows. This tactic worked until someone developed a way to fire their gun without exposing themselves to counterattack. This allowed for targeting of the attackers long before they reached the battlements, which meant that it became more efficient to leave your castle and attack someone else who didn't have such a glorious fortress. A handgun is not as powerful as an arquebus, but it can still be used in a similar manner in self defense when one is not able to use long guns such as rifles and shotguns. There were so many guns in the civilian population in the United States after independence, which led to the saying "a well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." The 2nd amendment was created by our founding fathers for this purpose. It was an act of defiance against tyranny. If it is your duty to maintain freedom for others, you must not rely on others to do it for you. You must take action or freedom will disappear. The right to bear arms in self-defense is very important when you are living in areas with dangerous animals either due to habitat or because they are released by hunters. cfa1e77820
